Cheese BikeIn much of Eastern Ontario this year, the summer solstice was aptly followed by a few relatively hot days.  To beat the heat, but also to join it, I went out on my road bike, exploring the side roads and villages surrounding the City of Kingston.

Will Eastern Ontario's Cheese Industry Take Off? PDF Print Email

This week, Eastern Ontario AgriNews, CKWS Kingston and 88.7 Napanee all reported on a new plan to make the region the "artisan cheese capital" of the province. Hoping to mimic the success of Prince Edward County's almost 30 wineries, existing producers are partnering with local economic development corporations to pitch business tools, know-how, and funding opportunities to would-be cheesemakers. Although the plan assumes that "what works for Prince Edward is good for Lennox and Addington, and what works in Lennox in Addington is good for Hastings," potential challenges abound. Producers require about $1M in upstart costs (stainless steel machinery, etc.) and artisan cheese may be less of a "universal" good than wine. It requires more advanced transportation methods and tourists are likely to comprise a large part of the market. In Prince Edward, where a tourist industry has already been established, local cheese may become a complementary good for local wine. But elsewhere in the region, is the market truly large enough? Does bringing new cheese producers to regions outside PEC threaten to saturate local markets where few complimentary industries (wine, tourism, etc.) exist?
